6 Syllable Types - Phonics





I made this chart this past weekend and wanted to share it with my fellow teacher friends!- Enjoy~ Ms. T !!!!

6 Syllable patterns to remember!
Pattern 1


Always divide¹ after the prefix2

Pattern 2


Always divide before the suffix3

traction   

trac / tion
Pattern 3


When one or more consonants4 are followed by “le” count back three and divide

maple  

ma/ ple
RULE BREAKER ALERT!      -ckle         stands ALONE!

Note this doesn’t apply to words that end in ( the “ck” is one sound!)

-ckle                            pickle      pi/ ckle                  tackle   ta/ ckle

Pattern 4


When there are two consonants in the middle, you should divide between the consonants
Examples

ll
happen


hap/ pen
RULE BREAKER ALERT!

Unless they blend into one sound such as “ph” and “ch”  NEVER DIVIDE these one sound pairs!   /ph/    /wh/    /sh/    /ch/    /th/ 

Pattern 5


When one consonant appears between two vowels5, it will most likely be in the same syllable as the second vowel.

When a consonant is between TWO vowel friends it hangs out with its second friend!

Divide between compound words

doghouse
dog / house
Pattern 7


Divide before a single middle consonant when the vowel sounds before it is long.

Divide after the middle consonant (or consonant blend6 like “ph” “sh”) when the vowel sound before it is short

Divide between two vowels that DON’T blend to make one sound     
being
be / ing

    suffix3 a group of letters attached to the ending of a root word (trac-tion)

    consonants4 letters of the alphabet that are NOT VOWELS

    vowels5 the letters of the alphabet a e i o u and sometimes “y”

    consonant blend6 a combination of two consonant letters- both letters can be heard ( bl-ack)
